3-On-3 Basketball, Softball & Flat-Track Roller Derby Tournaments Round Out River City Sports Festival in Mason City, Iowa
Online, May 1, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Basketball, softball and flat-track roller derby are another three of the nine featured tournaments being showcased at the inaugural River City Sports Festival [RCSF] in Mason City, Iowa. These amateur tournaments start team action on May 10, 2014. Only the 3-on-3 basketball competition will have divisions separated by gender and age.
The basketball and roller derby battles will take place outdoors at North Iowa Area Community College [NIACC], while Mason City Parks and Recreation will host the softball tournament at the Frederick-Hanford Softball Complex.
Registration is still open for the three tournaments. Competition information and registration details for all three are available at RCSportsFestival.com. Budweiser presents Rumble in River City, the headlining professional wrestling spectacular featuring former WWE and WCW as well as current TNA/Impact superstars, is still offering free tickets to the first 1,000 competitors who register in advance for RCSF. Other ticket information for Rumble in River City can be found at RumbleinRiverCity.com.
"Team sports are very important to shaping our youth in society," said Ernest "The Cat" Miller, former WCW superstar and commissioner of RCSF. "It's exhilarating to know that the River City Sports Festival is having a hand in supporting the development of sportsmanship, leadership and working together on the court, diamond or track for our young athletes and adult amateurs."
3-On-3 Basketball Tournament
The basketball tournament is broken into several divisions and separated by gender. Those divisions include: boys and girls 6th grade and under, 7th and 8th grade, high school, men's and women's open, as well as a men's B division. The tournament is based on pool play to determine division champions with a four game guarantee and each one played to 25 points or 25 minutes, whichever comes first. There's a $100 team fee for up to four players.
Tracy Murray, former UCLA and NBA basketball star, will be a special guest during the tournament.
"It's the NBA playoffs time and time for our competitors to show what they have on the court at the River City Sports Festival," said Todd Ciochetto, RCSF basketball director. "The court action is expected to be fast and furious."
Softball Tournament
The softball tournament will include amateur ASA class teams classified as "D" or below, with a five game guarantee. More information about tournament packets and rules are at RCSportsFestival.com. There is a $100 entry fee for each team.
The softball competition is being sponsored by Chop Restaurant and The Eleven Club, a night club in Mason City, where Budweiser and Kabrick Distributing Company of Mason City Inc., the local Budweiser distributor, will host pro wrestling icon Gorgeous George for a special appearance Friday, May 2, and a post-party for Rumble in River City.
"Softball has a great history dating back more than 100 years ago," said Brian Pauly, RCSF softball director. "So it's truly a fantastic thing that it's one of the many sports being highlighted at this first-ever event. We are thrilled that teams are coming here from all over the Midwest to compete, have fun, and show everyone how exciting softball can be."
Flat-Track Roller Derby Tournament
The roller derby tournament will be hosted in the parking lot at NIACC. Teams are required to pay a fee of $80 each. The RCSF event organizers added roller derby to the competition lineup as contests rolled out on flat surfaces have already begun heating up in the Iowa area, as well as across the country. This version of the sport evolved in 2001, and now boasts more than 700 leagues across 25 countries around the world.
"This version of roller derby is exploding," Miller said. "Its popularity and grassroots is attracting women and teenagers lifting each other up, working together, and empowering the next generation. We are very excited about making it a big part of the River City Sports Festival."
The River City Sports Festival, sponsored by Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers and presented by Ronin' Productions LLC, is May 9 - 11, 2014, for both individual and team competitors.
