20 Things Volunteer Ministers Did to Help Fiji

Pastor Alfy and his Scientology Volunteer Ministers travel by truck to nearby villages to help them recover from Cyclone Winston

A team of Scientology Volunteer Ministers from the village of Nalalawa have spent the better part of the past three months traveling to 20 nearby villages to help them recover from Cyclone Winston. With winds as high as 200 miles per hour, the cyclone left tens of thousands homeless. Winston is the worst tropical storm ever measured in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Volunteer Ministers were led by Alfred Waqa, a Christian pastor who trained as a Scientology Volunteer Minister in 2012. Pastor Alfy, as he is known, has responded to numerous disasters over the past four years.

"Something can be done about it."

L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology Founder

Pastor Alfy led his team of 85 Volunteer Ministers, first assisting the village of Nalalawa and then traveling to nearby villages where they cleared and disposed of debris and helped shore up, restore or rebuild 500 houses, two schools and eight churches that were destroyed or damaged by the storm.

They  distributed food, water and clothing to those in need and  delivered 20 seminars where they trained people to deliver Scientology assists, techniques developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that speed healing by addressing the spiritual and emotional factors in stress and trauma.

They also formed partnerships with the Naiserelagi Youth group and the headmen of the villages of Nalalawa and Nanukuloa, where they established new Volunteer Ministers groups that are now on call in the event of future disasters.

Whether serving in their communities or on the other side of the world, the motto of the Scientology Volunteer Minister is “Something can be done about it.” The program, created in the mid 1970s by L. Ron Hubbard and sponsored by the Church of Scientology International as a religious social service, constitutes one of the world’s largest international independent relief forces.

The Volunteer Minister “helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.”

A global network of Volunteer Ministers mobilizes in times of manmade and natural disasters, answering the call wherever needed. Collaborating with some 1,000 organizations and agencies, they have utilized their skill and experience in providing physical support and spiritual aid at hundreds of disaster sites.
