145th ANNUAL CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY TO FEATURE DEDICATION OF ARKANSAS MONUMENT
Hosted by Turner Ashby Chapter #184, United Daughters of the Confederacy
Winchester, Virginia - Amid the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the War Between the
States, Turner Ashby Chapter #184 United Daughters of the Confederacy will host the 145th
Annual Confederate Memorial Day Monday, June 6th, 6:30pm, at Stonewall Cemetery, within
Mt. Hebron Cemetery, 305 E. Boscawen Street, Winchester. Immediately following the
ceremony, an Arkansas Monument will be dedicated, honoring the twenty men of the 3rd
Arkansas Infantry buried in Stonewall Cemetery.
The 145th Confederate Memorial Day Service will feature keynote speaker Lieutenant Colonel
Eric W. Buckland (Ret.), author of "Mosby's Keydet Rangers" (First and Second Editions) and
"Mosby Men". Eric will present "Biographical Sketches of Some of Mosby's Men", to include
some of those buried within Mt. Hebron Cemetery.
Buckland had a 22 year career in the Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1999. He
spent most of his career in Special Operations (Special Forces, Civil Affairs and Psychological
Operations) with multiple deployments to Panama, Honduras and El Salvador. His awards
include the Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Special Operations Combat Diver Badge, Master
Parachutist Badge, Expert Infantryman's Badge and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
Buckland is a member of the Mosby Heritage Area Association and its Gray Ghost Interpretive
Group. He is also the Secretary of the Stuart-Mosby Historical Society. "Mosby's Keydet
Rangers" is Eric's first book and reflects his great interest in Mosby's Rangers, irregular
warfare during the War Between the States and the Virginia Military Institute.
Period musical selections will be performed by the Tuscarora Brass Band.
Several awards will be presented to recognize individuals for their dedication to country and
the goals of the organization which include patriotic, benevolent, historical, educational and
memorial.
Originally founded by The Ladies Memorial Association, predecessors of Turner Ashby
Chapter 184 United Daughters of the Confederacy, Stonewall Cemetery was formally
dedicated in 1866 among ominous observance. The 2,575 Confederate Soldiers buried in
Stonewall Cemetery derive from thirteen different states. Various States, organizations and
individuals have erected impressive monuments in honor of the soldiers who died on the
battlefields and in hospitals within the area. Twenty men of the Third Arkansas Infantry CSA
are buried in the cemetery. It is currently the largest of two sections left without a
monument. Kentucky, with her three Confederate Soldiers, remains without a monument.
The fruition of the Arkansas Monument became a reality with various fund raising
projects. Turner Ashby Chapter 184 UDC and Turner Ashby Camp 1567 Sons of Confederate
Veterans hosted "A Day With Mosby Symposium" in October. Eric Buckland donated
booklets he compiled and edited for the chapter to sell entitled "The Millionaire Mosby
Ranger, Charles Broadway Rouss". Donations were also received from private individuals.
Additionally, the Arkansas Division United Daughters of the Confederacy and their supporters
raised $2,000, while the Arkansas Division Sons of Confederate Veterans donated over $400.
The Arkansas Monument Dedication Service will feature music performed by the Tuscarora
Brass Band and a special performance by Mike Jeffries of The City of Winchester Pipes and
Drums. Members of the Arkansas Division United Daughters of the Confederacy, Virginia
Division United Daughters of the Confederacy and Turner Ashby Camp 1567 Sons of
Confederate Veterans will also be participating.
The services will be held rain or shine and are free and open to the public. Chair seating is
limited, so please plan accordingly.
