We Asked 500+ People How Brands Deceive Them Online

Dismissing ethical best practices can be costly, suggests a new study on deceptive patterns from digital product agency BlueLabel.

The study surveyed 536 people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 93, asking respondents several questions to test their knowledge of deceptive designs, and then asked respondents to rate the deceptiveness (if any) of five examples found on the web.

The survey, which ran from late February to early March 2023, showcased the following data:

  • 1 out of 4 respondents (24.4%) feels they have encountered a deceptive pattern in digital product design (i.e., website, app, game, etc.).
  • 39.4% reported feeling deceived by a product as a deal-breaker in using the brand moving forward.
  • When respondents were asked to disclose a time they felt deceived by a brand, they mentioned several well-known businesses that are named in the full report.
