My Improv Traffic School Supports Autonomous Cars (In Theory)

Self-driving cars are coming soon. Already Nevada has approved their use on state roads and California seems very close to making them legal there as well. That means in no time we will manually driven cars and autonomous car sharing the road.

For better or worse, self-driving cars seem likely to be hitting the roads sooner than anyone (including us at My Improv Traffic School) imagined.

Some defensive drivers are likely looking forward to getting other, less defensive drivers, off the roads and behind the wheel of something which will not drive aggressively, speed through yellow lights or roll through stop signs. But not everyone is so thrilled at the idea.

Insurance companies, legislators and automobile manufacturers have been furiously working out the details of how these self-driving cars will be registered, who will be liable in the event of an accident and how some situations will be handled by police. In Nevada and (almost) California these details have been worked out to the satisfaction of all involved.

Just a few weeks ago Nevada became the first state to approve the use of self-driving cars on their roadways. These cars use a mix of on-board sensors to detect road conditions, obstacles and other changes in the driving environment with GPS navigation to help it find its way from one point to another. In theory, owners of self-driving cars will be able to program a destination, press a button and relax while the car does all the work. There is also a button to allow the driver to take control of the vehicle at all time, just in case.

We at My Improv Traffic School do not take these self-driving cars as a threat to our livelihood. It seems unlikely everyone will suddenly lose the urge to drive themselves. But it is nice to know that people who have had too much to drink, or all suffering from a physical condition which prevents them from driving, will now be able to get around.

And for people who do still drive themselves, we'll be here when you need us.
