"Greene Going Green: An Extreme Home Makeover"

New Homeowner Launches Eco-Friendly Living Project in Arlington, VA Community

Northern Virginia residents and commuters will soon have a daily birds-eye view of one of the most aggressive eco-friendly renovation projects in the city of Arlington, VA, via I-395 South in the DC Metro Area. Just to the side of the overpass leaving the state of Virginia passing into Washington, DC, the Arlington View community will be welcoming a new contemporary design to its traditional roots. Project highlights include: improved site design; enhanced indoor air quality; maintaining the existing infrastructure, increased energy and water efficiency, and a multitude of other strategic improvements that will develop organically in and around the home even after the project is complete.

Arlington, VA resident, Mr. Ronald Greene, says his passion for environmental awareness is more than a trend. "A number of years ago, I found myself becoming alarmed by the rate at which scientists believed we were having a detrimental impact on climate change. It made me want to increase my awareness of the green movement and help effect change."

Years later, Mr. Greene took action and began to educate himself in ways he could make a difference in his community. "When I first decided to live as a proactively environmentally responsible citizen, I wanted a timber framed home. These homes are beautiful and a bit more picturesque than traditional log homes, but, although very eco-friendly, I thought this type of home might be outside my budget and wondered what obstacles county codes would present to allow for such a fixture. I begin to realize that the "going green" goal is not to destroy and rebuild, but to reuse and renovate. I then educated myself in the "green building" process and developed a strategy to convert my existing home into an Energy Star certified home minimizing the construction while using the most cost effective methods known in the industry.

Today, Mr. Greene is attempting to share his layman's understanding and "going green" dream to others that want to go green but in a financially feasible way. With expert Residential Designer, Max Spriggs, of Spriggs Drafting Company in Tallahassee, FL, Mr. Greene plans to renovate his traditional home to include stellar design elements that will allow him uninhibited views of the DC skyline, improve air and water quality, reduce home operating costs, and improve overall quality of life.

Spriggs agreed to the project, intrigued by the challenge of creating an eco-friendly home on a limited budget. According to Mr. Spriggs, "It was a challenge for me as Mr. Greene presented me with a very limited budget and I can't emphasize "very" enough but, I could feel his passion to make this "green" project happen so we worked hard and long to ensure the design minimized construction costs."

Mr. Greene will retain interior design, landscaping and other professionals who share his commitment to environmentally sound living to work with him to identify paints, flooring, appliances, and plants that not only create the ambiance and Zen most often envisioned within an ecologically balanced environment, but also the true dollars and cents savings of an energy-efficient home.
