$5 Million Grant to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Port of Long Beach (Port) has developed a progressive grant program, the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Mitigation Grant Program (GHG Grant Program), to help offset the negative environmental impact we cause in business every day. The goal of the program is "to fund projects that reduce, avoid, or capture greenhouse gas emissions."

$5 million in total grant funds will be allocated, which includes a $1 million cap per organization. There are four eligible categories for which funds are available:
1. Energy Efficiency Projects
2. Transportation Projects
3. Renewable Energy Projects
4. Landscaping Projects

With each category having specific measures that qualify, the underlying goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) around the Port. A major contributor of excess GHG is inefficient energy use. Most commercial and industrial buildings waste anywhere from 10-50% of the energy they use. This excess waste contributes to global warming, in addition to significantly increasing energy costs.

One of the greatest studies a business can undergo to identify where they are wasting energy is an Energy Audit. This is a comprehensive assessment of a building, its mechanical systems and its employee's behaviors to offer solutions that save energy and GHG emissions. The GHG Grant Program recognizes this fact and offers additional points to organizations that have a qualified energy auditor inspect their building and make recommendations for qualifying energy efficiency measures.

Qualified energy auditors should have undergone extensive training in Building Science and energy efficiency. Such certifications should, at a minimum, include Certified Energy Auditor (Association of Energy Engineers) and Building Analyst (Building Performance Institute). Vert Energy Group energy consultants are qualified energy auditors and have wide-ranging experience in all facets of energy efficiency and cost savings.
