20,000 Trees In One Minute!

At 12 noon on December 12th, 2010 in Lima, Peru, 40,000 people will attempt to shatter the Guinness Book World Record for planting trees. The goal: 20,000 trees in ONE MINUTE!

The coordinators of the event, Vidas Verdes (http://vidasverdes.blogspot.com/), a Lima based environmental organization believe that the coverage of such an exciting event will generate a lot of attention and help to mobilize the nation to take positive actions to combat global climate change.

Peru, one of the three countries most vulnerable to climate change, is loosing it`s glaciers at a rapid rate. As they disappear water supplies fall, creating stress and tension between communities and it is now recognized that these shortages are leading to local water wars.

With melting ice on the Andes having a catastrophic effect to Peru's water tables and wildlife, planting trees is widely recognized as one way to balance the effects of climate change. The saplings planted will grow into a rain-forest which will turn the coastal desert into a lush, water-retaining vista.

The project is being supported by British born Paul Coleman who was invited to lend an international profile. Known as the 'Earthwalker', Coleman who is the Ambassador to the UN designated `Culture of Peace` Peace Messenger Initiative has walked almost 50,000 kilometres through 39 nations, planting trees as he goes and spreading the message that water is a universal right and the natural environment needs to be protected. Coleman will be accompanied on his Peruvian mission by his wife Konomi Kikuchi, a Japanese author who recently was honoured by the Swiss based Womens World Summit Foundation, with their 2010 Creativity In Rural Life Award.

On December 10, International Human Rights Day, a Water for Peace Press Conference will be held in Lima and attended by members Vidas Verdes and Paul Coleman.
