Word of Caution to Young People About Meningitis Danger Issued by TempIR

Meningitis is an infection of the meninges - the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. September is a time of year when students are in particular danger, according to TempIR.

TempIR an online company which sells home health care products such as non-contact thermometers, finger pulse oximeters, wrist cuff wrist blood pressure machines and dual thermometers feels it within its duty of care to advice students of the meningitis threat.   As students prepare to go to college, they are being warned to look out for each other and the signs for meningitis.  Some of the signs are similar to flu and possibly hangovers and young people at University may not be aware of what to look for.

Meningitis symptoms can include a high fever, feeling unwell, agitation, confusion, vomiting and headaches.  These are similar to flu like symptoms, which also include fever, headaches, vomiting.  News reports in the last few days have been asking students to check on each other and not assume their sick friends have ‘fresher’s flu”.

TempIR company spokesperson, Aidan Wade said: "It's quite easy to see someone ill and think they have flu or even a hangover.  The symptoms of a hangover can also be like those of flu or meningitis.  Students are being encouraged to look out for their new friends and make sure they are not left alone too long when ill.  We feel it would also be helpful if parents though about packing a first aid kit with a thermometer when sending their child off to university or college away from home.  It's not always something young people would think of.  This would mean students could check easily whether they have a fever and need to see a doctor and could prevent a potentially serious illness from becoming life threatening."

In Wales, this is something being taken very seriously and students under 25 who are attending university for the first time in the autumn are being advised to get the vaccine from their GP surgery at least two weeks before they start. People born between 1 September 1996 and 31 August 1997, can get it from their GP, while younger people will have it at their surgery or in school in the next two years.
