2016: The Year the Phone Number Started to Go Extinct; Apps Such as AlphaDial Hastening Demise of Traditional Phone Numbers

AlphaDial is an app that allows uses to dial phone numbers as word without having to remember and figure out which number corresponds to the letter needed. The app is available on Android as a demo while its development team work to directly integrate it with the phone's native dial pad, and with an iOS version coming soon. Just over two weeks into 2016, Facebook stunned the world with its latest ambition: to “kill off” the phone number in support of its Messenger feature.

As the news reverberated around news desks worldwide, one Florida-based company had the perfect rejoinder. AlphaDial, available on Android devices, lets users dial numbers using alphabetic characters—without having to remember which number corresponds to the letter required.

"While vanity numbers such as 800GoFedEx have been around for years, actually using them hasn't been as simple as it could be," explained Fred Greene, the lead developer of AlphaDial. "What we've done is take out that last frustration, allowing users to simply type out the vanity number and press call. No more frustration trying to remember which number corresponds to which letter: our app takes care of the whole process."

No more frustration trying to remember which number corresponds to which letter: our app takes care of the whole process.”

As Facebook gears up to demolish the entire concept of the phone number In support of messenger, critics are already noting that after 127 years, the number system isn’t likely to simply go away—and AlphaDial is just one way in which users are adapting the system to fit their own preferences.

The AlphaDial app is already gaining rave reviews from users. Like many users, one user complimented AlphaDial’s ease of use, noting that it is “super easy, you don’t have to figure out words to phone number!”

While 2016 has started out with bold predictions about the demise of the phone number in favour of more easily-remembered alphabetical dialling methods, only time can tell if this revolution will succeed. With services such as AlphaDial now available to consumers, this is just the beginning of another tech revolution.
