How Can Bricks-and-mortar Companies Succeed in E-commerce in China?

In Western countries, bricks-and-mortar enterprises have a big slice of the e-commerce market. But in China, traditional retailers are finding this transition difficult.

Following the 'go into e-commerce or go out of business' mantra and inspired by success stories such as 360buy, more and more bricks-and-mortar companies are setting up e-commerce operations - but with limited success.

In Western countries, bricks-and-mortar enterprises have a big slice of the e-commerce market. In the US, nine of the top 10 online retailers (including Staples, Apple, Dell and Walmart) are traditional retailers that have developed an e-commerce operation. But in China, traditional retailers are finding this transition difficult.

The 2012 China E-commerce Marketing Forum in Shanghai on June 7 will examine how bricks-and-mortar companies can get e-commerce right in China. Should they engage in price wars? Will production still be the key-success-factor when it comes to online business? How can they prevent their online sales cannibalizing their offline sales? How does e-marketing work? How can website traffic be turned into sales volume?

Invited speakers include executives from e-commerce platforms such as Taobao, yihaodian (one of China's biggest online department store), jiuxianwang (e-seller of wines) and shishangqiyi (fashion) and bricks-and-mortar launching e-commerce operations, including Fairwhale (menswear), Bally (shoes), Bosideng (clothing), and Tongrentang (pharmaceutical).

The forum, co-hosted by Shichangbu.com and Shanghai International Sourcing Promotion Center, will gather senior management officers from well-known e-commerce companies and e-commerce marketing professionals and successful e-commerce and e-marketing case studies will be presented.

The forum will take place at the same time as the 2012 International E-shopping Fair organized by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce. For more information see http://dianshang.shichangbu.com.
