C-section or Vaginal Birth? What Should I Opt For?

Researchers used data on almost 144,000 women between the years 2004 to 2011.

(http://www.xmaspharmacy.com/) : A common question that lurks in the minds of many pregnant women nowadays. If previous delivery is C-section, most of the women choose the option of surgical procedure in second delivery as well. Fear is many times the root cause of this decision. However, a recent research suggests that women who have caesarian delivery during birth of first child can be successful in delivering their second child naturally.

Researchers used data on almost 144,000 women between the years 2004 to 2011. These women had undergone C-section for their first delivery. Researchers found that 52% of these women attempted vaginal birth when their second child was born. Among them, 63% of women were successful in delivering their child naturally.

The success rates varied depending on age and ethnicity. Black women had lower success rates (50%) than white women (66%). Those women who were older than 34 years also showed lower success rates (59%) as compared to their younger counterparts (69%).

Study also found that women who were younger than 24 years of age were more likely to opt for vaginal birth than their counterparts who were older than 34 years of age. Similarly, Asian and African women were more inclined to natural delivery than white women. However, for unexplained reasons, rates of attempted and successful natural deliveries varied from hospitals to hospitals.

According to researchers, the reason behind first caesarian surgery also plays an important role in determining whether the second attempt of vaginal birth will be successful. If C-section was administered on account of history of failed induced labor, the possibility of delivering in a child naturally in second pregnancy is two times less. However, if first C-section was uncomplicated, the success rates of natural baby birth in second attempt are going to be higher.

Researchers said that whether or not to opt for vaginal birth after previous C-section depends on the risk assessment. Women should be informed about chances of having natural delivery after a C-section.
