Thirty Minutes of Daily Training More Effective Than One Hour, Say Researchers
Three month study reveals surprising results, data published in American Journal of Physiology.
October 10, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Researchers from the University of Copenhagen recently concluded that 30 minutes of daily training provides better results than 60 minutes, and their data has been published in the American Journal of Physiology. The 60 volunteers in their study were moderately overweight men and their goal was to get in better shape. Half exercised for an hour and the other half for 30 minutes daily. All exercised daily for three months and were instructed to produce a light sweat, and to slightly boost the intensity three times weekly.
The researchers found that on average, the men who exercised 30 minutes daily lost 7.9 pounds in three months, while those who exercised for a whole hour only lost 5.9 pounds. They concluded that exercising for a whole hour instead of a half does not provide any additional loss in either body weight or fat.
"People ought to be up on their feet as much as possible, since walking is the ideal fat-burning activity," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).
"Three to five strength sessions per day of just one minute each, is advisable," adds Tom. "We have found that the 30 daily minutes can even be broken down into two 15-minute sessions or three 10-minute sessions with similar (or better) results, which means that you should be able to fit in the half hour a day no matter how busy you are."
