The Ravages of Ultra-Violet Radiation

Protecting your home from this scourge should be a priority for many homeowners.

In the 1980s, scientists and environmentalist groups around the world began to warn us about the impact human activity was having upon the ozone layer. This thin band in the stratosphere, rich in trioxygen – or ozone – was responsible for stopping harmful radiation from the sun reaching us at ground level. Without it, ultraviolent radiation, a form of light harmful to most forms of life, has an unchecked path directly to us.

The ozone layer was being thinned and damaged primarily by our use of chloroflourocarbons, or CFCs, present in popular aerosols we were applying as an insect repellent and pest control agent. Large amounts of the chemical were drifting upwards and damaging the ozone layer, weakening our planet’s natural defence against this harmful radiation.

After CFCs were banned by most western countries, little more was heard about this issue, as we moved on to the greater environmental concerns of the 1990s. But this problem has not disappeared completely. Levels of UV have dropped only slightly since we banned the chemicals responsible. The thinned ozone levels are expected to take another three to four decades to recover fully, a situation that will only occur if we continue to reduce our overall use of CFCs – as many nations have not yet committed to.

This increased UV, in particular at high latitudes, has been wreaking havoc upon both our climate, and our possessions. Apart from the overall danger posed by increased UV and its relationship to climate change, increased UV fades and damages everything from paint finishes to the colours of interior furniture.

Protecting your home from this scourge should be a priority for many homeowners. That is why we, at Wollongong Window Tinting, can provide a tint which filters out these harmful UV rays, ensuring the safety and longevity of both yourself and your possessions – at least, until our planet’s natural defence mechanism as back up and running at full capacity again.
