TEXAS RANGERS' INFIELDER ELVIS ANDRUS PRESENTS DONATION TO OURCALLING, INC. AT BASEBALL GAME
Donation Will Help the Homeless In Dallas
Elvis Andrus, infielder for the Texas Rangers, presented a donation check to OurCalling, Inc. before the Rangers game this week. "Elvis has shown great generosity and his donation will help us serve the homeless on the streets of Dallas" says Executive Director, Wayne Walker.
With over 275,000 people living below the poverty level in Dallas, the needs of our poorest citizens grow daily. Unemployment, lack of affordable housing and lack of adequate mental health care contribute to the growing homeless population. OurCalling, which started as a volunteer movement, serves thousands of individuals who live on the streets in Dallas.
OurCalling is a nonprofit that serves the homeless community throughout Dallas county. OurCalling operates a cafeÌ in South Dallas for the homeless that provides daily meals, showers, laundry services and distribution of needed resources. They are a faith-based Christian charity that serves thousands of homeless individuals by building personal relationships and focusing on the issues that keep people on the streets. They host Bible Studies, Life Skills, 12-Step addiction recovery classes and one-on-one mentoring opportunities. OurCalling also serves in over 150 different locations throughout Dallas county by trekking under bridges, behind liquor stores, deep in wooded encampments, in abandoned buildings, drug houses, brothels, and working with families living in cars.
The check for $12,500 was presented on Tuesday August 21, 2012 on the field at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington before the game against the Baltimore Orioles. The funds will be used to provide a new washer and dryer, technology and daily urgent needs for clients. Receiving the check for OurCalling was Carla Rincon (volunteer), Jonathan Habashy (Development Director), Jill Phillips (Volunteer Director) and Chris Dance (Chairman of the Board).
Elvis Andrus is an infielder for the Texas Rangers. He is referred to as "the most consistent player" on the team.
