State Farm Youth Advisory Board Funds C-STEM National Youth Commission

$86,000 awarded by State Farm Youth Advisory Board

An $86,000 grant awarded to C-STEM Teacher & Student Support Services will fund a new national service-learning initiative to research achievement gaps in STEM programs.  The State Farm Youth Advisory Board presented the grant to the National C-STEM Youth Commission on Saturday at Texas Southern University during an annual youth collaboration retreat.

The youth commission will enable students to research and implement ideas on the academic achievements gaps, drop-out rates and low participation within STEM among minority students. The students will share their research with communities and elected leaders.

“We appreciate the commitment from State Farm to fund initiatives which address important issues such as what the C-STEM Youth Commission will take on,” said Dr. Reagan Flowers, Founder and CEO of C-STEM. “We are providing the necessary resources to this group of students and they are taking full responsibility for the project which can make a big difference not only for them but, within their communities.”

Brent Wroten, State Farm Agency Vice President says “State Farm is committed to education and community, and has a vested interest in developing the technical talent of our youth to ensure they are positioned for success.” C-STEM hosted a retreat for the Youth Commission from Friday, November 13th until Sunday November 15th. During the weekend retreat, the Youth Commissioners set work goals and gained insight. Over the next nine months, the youth commissioners will research and complete a presentation for the C-STEM Board of Directors,  The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and The Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C. and other elected officials.
