Slate Tiles to Heal the Japan Disaster

Responding to nature's fury, which uprooted nuclear reactors in wake of Japan Tsunami just a few months back, nearly 40,000 slate tiles are found in perfect position to be used for restoration purpose. These tiles were produced in Miyagi Prefecture and were retrieved after being swept away in wake of tsunami that devastated Japan on March 11, 2011.

Strength has always been the hallmark of slate tiles and this can be ascertained by the fact that they are set to be brought in use particularly on the lower part of a domed roof on the Marunouchi side. These tiles were produced in Tome and were put to use on the roof in 1947 in wake of damage caused to the station building in World War II.

It is noteworthy that Kumagai Master Thatchers Co., one of the construction companies in Ishinomaki in the prefecture, was found storing the tiles for the purpose of station's restoration on the grounds of its facility after the tsunami scattered them. It is good to note that as employees were vested with this task, they found about 45,000, from which they washed off the dirt and made them ready for use. Out of these, 40,000 have been found fit for use by the East Japan Railway Company.

Taking into consideration the current number of tiles, it is found that about 457,000 tiles are actually needed for constructing the roof. It is has been decided by the JR East to import them from Spain and other parts of Tome.

It is great to note that some members of Aka-renga no Tokyo Eki o Aisuru Shimin no Kai have praised and encouraged JR East to use the slate tiles. In fact, they are set, not only to heal the hitherto considered irreparable loss, but win people's hearts and provide an impetus to the recovery process direly needed in the context of Japan.
