Heal, the app for on-demand doctor house calls, today announced that Secretary Ray Mabus has joined the Company’s Board of Directors.

Secretary Mabus joins Heal’s board after spending nearly eight years as U.S. Navy Secretary under President Barack Obama. The longest serving Secretary of the Navy since World War I, Mabus was also recognized as one of the top 50 CEOs in the country.

"Heal's mission to change the healthcare system for the better is a noble one, and one I'm passionate about. Access to convenient and affordable care is a right, not a privilege. I look forward to playing an active role on the board to ensure Heal's progress continues for the betterment of all Americans who strive to gain access to care they need, when and where they need it."

During his tenure from 2009 to 2017, Mabus earned international attention for his efforts to rebuild the U.S. fleet, and improving the quality of life for Sailors and Marines, launching 21st Century Sailor and Marine, a comprehensive health improvement plan including efforts to reduce sexual assault, suicide and alcohol and drug abuse.

“Heal’s mission to change the healthcare system for the better is a noble one, and one I’m passionate about,” said Secretary Mabus. “Access to convenient and affordable care is a right, not a privilege. I look forward to playing an active role on the board to ensure Heal’s progress continues for the betterment of all Americans who strive to gain access to care they need, when and where they need it.”

Welcoming Secretary Mabus to the Heal Board comes shortly after the company hired Rish Tandon, former General Manager of Mobile Apps at Amazon, and Bhavini Soneji, former Director of Engineering at Snap Inc., as CTO and SVP of Engineering, respectively.

Additionally, Heal announced several landmark milestones: 16,000 patient house call visits, more than $5.9 million in healthcare savings costs, cutting unnecessary prescription antibiotic usage more than half, raising $52 million in funding, and reducing non-emergency trips to the ER/Urgent care by 62 percent for its patients and partners, in two years. They’ve also shared plans to expand to cities in Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania by the end of 2017.

“We have a great deal of respect and admiration for the extensive work Secretary Mabus dedicated to creating positive change for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp, among other areas of his professional career. We feel strongly that his guidance, insight, and leadership will be invaluable assets to Heal’s future growth and success,” said Nick Desai, CEO and co-founder of Heal.
