There is no such thing as 'one size fits all' justice. The concept of tort reform may be attractive to some… until they have to look the victim of it in the eye. Trial lawyers have a responsibility to step up and fight for their clients and the public when legislators try to strip away basic rights to fairness and justice.

Rebecca J. Britton, Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Britton Law, P.A.

With 25 years of experience, Ms. Britton brings a wealth of knowledge to her industry, and in particular to her area of specialization, personal injury law. When asked why she decided to pursue a career in law, Ms. Britton said:

"I wasn't at fault and didn’t cause much of the damage. My insurance company ended up resolving everything for me. That experience, however, prompted me to focus on legal terminology in the last quarter of my secretarial program and navigated me towards the legal field. After graduating, I went to work in the clerical pool for a law firm and over time was given more and more responsibilities and was eventually promoted to paralegal. With that experience, I gained the confidence to go back to college to get my four-year degree with a goal of then going to law school. I haven’t looked back since."

As a thought-leader in her field, Ms. Britton maintains a unique vantage point from which to follow prevailing trends in personal injury law. In particular, she sees daily the impact and implications of tort reform in North Carolina and supports and works with the North Carolina Advocates for Justice on a regular basis in efforts to fight and prevent further tort reform from happening in North Carolina. She noted:

"There is no such thing as ‘one size fits all’ justice. The concept of tort reform may be attractive to some… until they have to look the victim of it in the eye. Trial lawyers have a responsibility to step up and fight for their clients and the public when legislators try to strip away basic rights to fairness and justice."

With a position of prominence in her field, Ms. Britton has had many opportunities to publish works on a broad range of personal injury and wrongful death topics and is a frequent contributor to the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ, formerly NC Academy of Trial Lawyers or NCATL) Trial Briefs. Most prominently, in 2002 she authored The Lesly Jean Story: A Quest for Truth, A Quest for Justice based on her experiences with the Jean v. Collins case. In addition to all she has published for the NCAJ, she has also taught numerous classes and seminars both at the NCAJ as well as at Campbell University School of Law and has written numerous opinion pieces for the Fayetteville Observer Times.
