Philadelphia Debut of Prison Drama "V to X"

There are 1.5 Million black men missing from American homes. In GoKash Productions' world premiere of the theatrical prison drama "V to X" (5 to 10), playwright Kash Goins examines who and where they are.

According to the 2010 U.S. census, for every 100 black women age 25-54, there are approximately 83 black men in society.  Many of these men have been removed due to black-on-black crime. Of approximately 600,000 in U.S. jails and prisons, many have been sentenced for black-on-black crimes and some others by increased (and inconsistent) sentencing guidelines due to the American “War on Drugs”.  Many more simply can't afford to post bail.

“V to X”, the latest in a 10-play series that examines the contemporary African American experience, is written and directed by South Philly native, Kash Goins.  “V to X” is the prequel to Goins’ Award-Winning “VI Degrees” (Best Play, NYC Downtown Urban Theatre Festival, 2009). Five years in conception, “V to X” draws inspiration from harrowing disproportionate rates of young black male incarceration, the big business of privatized prisons and the experience of Khalief Browder, who’s diminished mental state due to three years of abusive Rikers  Island incarceration, without formal charges, drove him to suicide this June.

"Black men appear to be caught in a cycle of disadvantage: incarcerated at higher rates and, therefore, more likely to be unemployed and/or in debt, they have more trouble posting bail."

Nicholas Turner, Vera Institute of Justice
