Nordic Luxury Homeware Designer Welcomes Ellipse Serving Platter

This past week, Scandinavian homeware designer Aava announced the release of its Ellipse Wooden Serving Platter, an oval-shaped wood platter with two porcelain cups. A company representative said the simple design carries with it undertones of natural beauty.

Simplicity has a beauty all its own.

“Nordic design is closely linked with the land,” the representative said in a statement this week. “Our Ellipse platter is crafted with nature in mind, from its elegant elliptical shape and the rich, handsome wood we used for the platter itself.”

"Scandinavian design has always been rooted in usability and because of that, many of its pieces have appealed to a wide spectrum of cultures and countries,"

While Aava has long been known for its minimal design, the company’s new products have a knack for exploring new levels of beauty and function.

The platter is made of thick, mocha-toned wood whose natural grain weaves and wanders its way across the surface of the serving dish.

“Scandinavia has always been home to some of the world’s most mystical and magical forests, and the Ellipse captures some of that spirit by thrusting its natural wood to the forefront,” the representative said.

While the wood platter is enough to delight any host, the pair of white ceramic cups which accompany the Ellipse add a finishing touch to the dish’s personality.

The two cups are nestled in a pair of circular cutouts which are deep enough to hold the cups securely but not so deep that they intrude on the natural flow of the piece.

What results, the representative said, is a serving dish perfect for a wintry night when temperatures are creeping down to freezing and snow banks gently roll outside the living room window.

“I’ve always envisioned our Ellipse carrying a warm roast on a December night,” the representative said. “Aromas are rising from the platter and warm jus simmers in the porcelain cups.”

Fish, other meats and cheese also would suit the Ellipse platter, the representative said.

Along with the functionality of the Ellipse comes a sense of timelessness rooted in the simple elliptical design of the platter and the understated porcelain cups.

Another Aava representative said this sense of legacy is an important aspect of the platter’s design.

“When we design a piece like our Ellipse, we want it to endure not just years, but generations,” she said. “This is meant to be an heirloom piece that will stay with a family for decades.”

The Ellipse platter is one of several new product launches coming from Aava this month. The company recently announced the release of their Finnish-steel Tea Light Holders, a handsome pair of decorative pieces which echo Aava’s goal to provide consumers with understated Nordic design crafted with high-quality, durable materials.

“Scandinavian design has always been rooted in usability and because of that, many of its pieces have appealed to a wide spectrum of cultures and countries,” an Aava spokesperson said.

Aava’s Ellipse Wooden Serving Platter is available for purchase through PayPal and by credit card at Aava’s website, www.aavanordic.com. The platter currently retails for $220.
