Music Culture Gets Dramatic Treatment in Bobbi's Canon, a New Musical Fiction by Local Writer, Musician

Barbara E. Stefàno's contemporary tragi-romance tells the harrowing, and often snarky, fictional tale of a young singer swirling out of control - in a way that only a real-life musician could.

Local writer and musician Barbara E. Stefàno has released her debut novel, Bobbi’s Canon: Round 1, a romantic tragedy revolving around the Missouri music scene of the early 1990s on.

Bobbi’s Canon: Round 1 is the first in a series of books that follow Bobbi Lane, a feisty musician whose massive talent and charisma onstage are mirrored in her private life by crippling self-doubt, recklessness and misplaced trust. At times harrowing and heartbreaking, Bobbi’s Canon is also peppered with snark, irony and familiar sexual faux pas.

Stefàno's fictional romp is well-informed by a quarter century of real-life experience on the local music scene since the late 1980s, first a college student majoring in vocal music, then during stints as lead vocalist in popular local rock 'n' roll band.

With Round 1, Bobbi’s burgeoning musical career puts her at odds with inflated egos, raging libidos, libations and musical sabotage. It all comes to a head with a tragic manipulation that ushers in life-altering confrontations:

Bobbi Lane could hear nothing over the buzz saw roaring between her ears, and wondered detachedly if this was what people destined for Hell hear as they die…

The gnarled, meaty fist came down in slow motion, hard. Bobbi watched it connect, jarring her face like the blow of a sledgehammer. Time slowed to a near-stop and her mind raced around the details that stagnated there: the bobbing of Mickey’s wild, black curls with every swing; the dull snap of bone and a ballooning cheek that threatened to swallow up her left eye; the trickle of blood that slung off into the air from his bruised fist each time he punched; the jagged root of a broken tooth that gouged her tongue and the metallic taste that filled her mouth; the wet warmth that soaked her chin and chest.

Mickey’s dark form hovered over her, his bearded face contorted into a snarl. From the corner of her right eye Bobbi could see the dim outline of the tavern’s back door. “I have to get to that door,” she thought. “I have to get there and get away and make this stop …”

Stefàno’s fictional romp is well-informed by a quarter century of real-life experience on the local music scene since the late 1980s, first a college student majoring in vocal music, then during stints as lead vocalist in popular local rock ‘n’ roll bands: the Strangers, Concept, Hitchcock, Class Act and the perennial oldies favorite, GTO, the headliner for 20 years of Twin City Days concerts. She’s fronted cover bands, served as primary songwriter for original bands, sung at venues as intimate as cow-field parties and before festival audiences numbering in the thousands. This seasoning as a performer inspired and informed the characters and events in Bobbi’s Canon. The book will resonate deeply with musicians and offer music fans some entertaining insights into the world and its potential drama.

Bobbi’s Canon: Round 2 and Round 3 – slated for spring and summer releases – continue Bobbi Lane’s saga with an ill-advised and abusive romance, and a disastrous confrontation that forever alters her path. Through it all, the well-intentioned ingénue battles her urges, her demons and her attraction to self-destructive behavior.
