LawAsYouGo Makes the Case for More Affordable Access to Justice

Legal tech startup seeks to build a bridge between the legal help people need and what they can afford.

Entrepreneur Ken DeCesare is no stranger to the need for legal help after overcoming a decade-long battle with addiction.

Meanwhile, attorney David Koberlein has seen his share of lawyers in need of clients and clients who desperately need legal representation.

Today, with DeCesare’s business background and Koberlein’s legal industry expertise, the two have come together to create a solution called LawAsYouGo.

With millions of people not being able to afford the cost of hiring a lawyer – typically thousands of dollars upfront - LawAsYouGo offers them affordable financing options.

“We are building a bridge between the legal help people need and what they can afford,” DeCesare said.

“There is no shortage of lawyers or people who need legal help. The problem is lack of affordability,” Koberlein explained further.

“We want to create more opportunity for lawyers while providing more representation to the people who need it that haven’t been able to afford previously.”

The legal services able to be financed are Family Law, Immigration, Criminal Defense and Civil Litigation, among other practice areas.

And competition? Not really.

There are other options aimed at making legal services more affordable, but typically such services are unbundled, priced separately, and can be confusing with consumers sometimes even paying more in the end.

LawAsYouGo offers financing from over 20 lending sources that will finance down to a 550 credit score, DeCesare and Koberlein contend.

The Background

After overcoming a decade of addiction, DeCesare found himself facing several unresolved legal issues, but without the money to hire a lawyer.

For three years, DeCesare was on a mission to find affordable legal help.

“I didn't have $50,000 to get all the legal help I needed, so I was just trying to find a solution,” he said.

Finally, more than 30 phone calls later, he found Koberlein, a local attorney with experience in family law, criminal defense and civil litigation.

When DeCesare found Koberlein, the timing was good. Koberlein had recently gone out on his own and was willing to accept a payment plan. DeCesare became his client. Not long after, they became business partners.

“If it wasn’t for my own experience, we never would have started LawAsYouGo,” DeCesare commented.

“We’re giving people who really need a lawyer a more affordable option,” Koberlein emphasized.

Their plan is now in action, building that bridge and spreading the word.

The message to the public: “You can afford to hire a lawyer. You can afford the justice that you deserve,” DeCesare said.

“You can finance almost any other large purchase,” DeCesare continued. “You should be able to finance your legal fees."

“This can change someone’s life, so our job is to go tell everyone about it.”

Koberlein concluded: “‘Having a lawyer when you need one is an investment in your future.”

And it’s an investment that LawAsYouGo is making more affordable.
