"I have lectured to lawyers all over the country about substance abuse, and how to take care of themselves. In addition to the work within my trial lawyer profession, this is something that has been very interesting and important to me. I've had a lot of people tell me that my book was truly inspirational to them."

With 50 years dedicated to law, Mr. Gwilliam brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular to his area of specialization, plaintiff civil litigation in a wide range of personal injury and employment issues. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in law, Mr. Gwilliam said:
"My professor came up to me and said ‘What do you want to do after you get out?’ And I said ‘I don't know.’ And he said ‘You oughta be a lawyer.’ And you know what came into my mind? Nothing. I'd never seen a lawyer, or known a lawyer, and none of my family had been educated. But I said ‘Hey, that's an interesting idea.’ And, you know what? It was my destiny to be a lawyer."
As a thought-leader in his industry, Mr. Gwilliam is widely-respected in the legal community and spends much of his time writing and lecturing about the issues that matter to him within the industry itself, while he is frequently called upon to serve as an expert witness on the standard of care for lawyers' conduct. He has written a memoir about his experiences as a trial lawyer, and has traveled the country to impart the lessons he's learned over the years. Mr. Gwilliam strives to help his fellow lawyers find a way to maintain both their physical and psychological health, and in doing so become better lawyers, and better individuals, in the process. He noted:
"I have lectured to lawyers all over the country about substance abuse, and how to take care of themselves. In addition to the work within my trial lawyer profession, this is something that has been very interesting and important to me. I've had a lot of people tell me that my book was truly inspirational to them."
Mr. Gwilliam is a member of the Alameda-Contra Costa County Trial Lawyers Association where he served as President from 1974 to 1975 and currently serves on the Board of Governors. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, American Bar Association, American Board of Trial Advocates where he was a Diplomat in 1976, American Association for Justice, and many other prominent professional organizations and associations.
