InventionShare Announces New Circuit Seed Inventions Can Reduce Label Size and Increase Sensitivity and Range for $13.2 Billion RFID Market

InventionShare is now looking for strategic partners who want to incorporate Circuit Seed technology into device and product offerings, with the benefit of leveraging market share and profitability through competitive feature sets and design and manufacturing advantages leading to the next generation of "internet of everything" devices.

Greg Waite, CEO of InventionShare™, announced today that Circuit Seed™, a new family of circuit building blocks for processing analog signals using fully digital components, can provide unique opportunities for the Radio Frequency ID (RFID) marketplace.

Speaking from the company’s Ottawa office, Mr. Waite said that Circuit Seed's building block technology will dramatically enhance the performance RFID applications by providing greater sensitivity and lower power consumption, and offering significant size reduction.  Other benefits include extended range, faster processing, and better signal reception and enhanced touch interaction.

In a basic RFID system, tags are attached to all items that are to be tracked. These tags are made from a tiny tag chip, called an integrated circuit (IC) which is connected to an antenna that can be built into different kinds of tags including apparel hang tags, labels, and security tags, and a wide variety of industrial asset tags. The tag chip's memory stores the product's electronic product code (EPC) and other variable information so that it can be read and tracked by RFID readers anywhere.  An RFID reader is a network-connected fixed or mobile device with an antenna that sends power as well as data and commands to the tags. The RFID reader acts like an access point for RFID tagged items so that the tag's data can be made available to business applications.

In the retail sector, RFID continues to be used for apparel tagging - and that application alone will demand 4.6 billion RFID labels this year; there is still some way to go, with RFID penetrating about 15% of the total addressable market for apparel. RFID in the form of tickets used for transit will demand 800 million tags in 2016. The tagging of animals (livestock, pets and endangered species) continues to be a legal requirement and social responsibility n many more territories, with 420 million tags being used in this sector in 2016.

Mr. Waite said, “Actively deploying a RFID system necessitates different components. Typically, installing a system requires basic hardware, including tag chips, tag antennas, readers, and reader antennas as well as reader control and application software, and solution providers to put it all together. RFID system applications can help improve the quality of business operations, inventory and the customer experience in a variety of industries - and Circuit Seed can help by providing tags that are smaller, faster, more energy efficient and which provide better range. Our Circuit Seed invention family is complemented by 5by5 Wireless™ for full duplex, extended range and better signal quality.”

Other applications include everything from embedding tags into people, medical applications, automotive, packages needing to be tracked, passports, books and assets such as tools. In total, IDTechEx expects that up to 10.4 billion tags will be sold in 2016. Receivers include UHF fixed portal, UHF embedded and handheld HF and LF Hand held, fixed, and embedded LF Vehicle and NFC Cellphone receivers.

Circuit Seed inventions are founded on a mixture of decades of experience and creativity, supported by a robust portfolio of IP. Circuit Seed introduces a dramatic shift in the existing way of designing analog circuits, effectively eliminating many of the known shortcomings. Benefits include:  unprecedented precision without precision parts; ultra-linear operation over an extreme dynamic range (>106); low noise, ultrahigh speed (analog at logic speed) and extreme low voltage (down to ~0.1V power supply); process parameter independence; compact footprint (amplifiers about the size of a couple of NAND gates); low power (~100uW for multi-GHz-range operation down to 10pW for KHz-range operation); and portable designs between ultra-deep sub-µm CMOS technology process nodes. This paradigm shift has eliminated the use of current mirrors or differential matched pairs with traditional bulky analog transistors while being able to recover from sleep mode at logic speed.

Simulation and silicon test results have demonstrated a dramatic reduction in power, better performance and higher accuracy, all with small integrated circuit footprints. The circuit designs are much simpler, reducing product costs with faster development, so less testing is required and there are fewer parts to assemble. These circuits are far more reliable in the newest CMOS processes, making Circuit Seed a real breakthrough all companies requiring digital circuits processing analog signals.
