Institute for Research on Women Launches Rejoinder Web Journal

The Institute for Research on Women (IRW) at Rutgers University is pleased to announce the publication of its new web journal Rejoinder, an online forum for feminist, queer, and social justice-inspired work.  Building on IRW’s innovative, interdisciplinary programming, each edition of Rejoinder will provide a space for intellectual exchange at the nexus of scholarship and activism. Rejoinder is edited by IRW Associate Director Sarah Tobias.

The first edition of Rejoinder is inspired by “Marking Time: Prison Arts and Activism,” an IRW project designed to explore the cultural aspects of imprisonment with a focus on art produced by prisoners and in response to mass incarceration. “Marking Time” began in October 2014 with a large conference on prison art and activism that included scholars, artists, activists, and community groups.  “Marking Time” also incorporated a month-long exhibition of art by current and formerly incarcerated individuals, an art workshop at Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility in Annandale, New Jersey, and the publication of a resource guide, containing an extensive compendium of organizations working on prison arts and a selection of art and writings.

This edition of Rejoinder complements IRW’s resource guide by featuring additional art, essays, and poetry related to prison arts and activism. Contributors include Violette Bule, Nick Fesette, Dana Greene, Ron Jenkins, Bruce Levitt, Courtney Polidori, Treacy Ziegler, and Samantha Zimbler.  Readers may subscribe to Rejoinder in order to receive notification about future issues.
