As concerns have grown over the childhood obesity epidemic which affects one-third of American children, access to healthy food at school has moved to the forefront of awareness. Many children consume half their daily meals during school hours, indicating that what children eat at school has a significant impact on both their overall health and academic performance.

A shared recognition by parents, schools and the federal government of the role that healthy foods play in academic performance and overall health has sparked support for a variety of initiatives and innovations centered around making healthier foods available to school children.

Good nutrition at school is more important than ever, leading to improved focus and sustained energy, both of which kids need in order to be successful at learning.

Since the passage of The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and the implementation of the USDA’s Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards in 2014, America has made critical steps on the road to delivering healthier food choices to our nation’s students. The improved nutrition standards set basic limits on the fat, salt and calories of foods and beverages sold through school vending machines and cafeterias.

A poll released by The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Heart Association revealed that the majority of parents of school-age children support strong national nutrition standards for all foods and beverages sold to students during the school day. The nationally representative poll assessed parents’ opinions of nutrition standards for both school meals and snack foods and beverages. The study revealed that most parents don’t consider the nutritional quality of snack foods and beverages traditionally sold in schools to be healthy, and that the vast majority of parents of school-age children favor higher nutrition standards for foods and beverages served in schools. The poll also disclosed that 74 percent of parents are concerned about childhood obesity and 72 percent of parents support standards for school snacks.

Replacing unhealthy foods sold in school vending machines with healthier snacks and drinks provides a solution to help children stay fueled and ready for learning throughout the day. While many schools lack the resources necessary to implement changes that can positively impact student health, partnering with like-minded companies, such as HealthyYOU Vending, can help promote healthy choices in schools.
