"ALS is a particularly heartbreaking disease to dedicate your life to, because at this point there is nothing I can do to stop the disease. However, if I can help patients manage their symptoms, help them with their breathing and quality of life, it makes a huge difference to the patient. I am just completely humbled and honored by the fact that I am the one that can help them with that, and I want to do everything in my power to help them live the best lives they can possibly live."

Ashraf Elsayegh, M.D., FCCP, FAASM, Physician & Researcher, Cedars-Sinai

With 15 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Elsayegh brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his area of expertise, pulmonary medicine. His interest and research centers around neuromuscular disorders, specifically amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as well as diaphragm dysfunction and disorders. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Elsayegh said:

"Growing up, I’d always wanted to be a physician because I wanted to help people, and had seen the way physicians treating their patients helped them feel better quickly. I found my specialty after finishing medical school, while completing my internal medicine residency. The chairman of the department of medicine was a pulmonary critical care physician. He was a kind man who was an informal advisor for me, and of course he always recommended pulmonary critical care because that was what he specialized in. More than that, what I really loved about pulmonary medicine was the significant change I could see him making in patients’ lives. It seemed like an obvious fit."

Today, in his work with Cedars-Sinai Hospital, he is a preeminent pulmonary medicine specialist who puts the needs of his patients first. In addition to offering cutting-edge neuromuscular disorder treatment to his patients, Dr. Elsayegh is a dedicated ALS researcher and is involved in several studies related to diaphragm dysfunction and the Diaphragm Pacing System. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Elsayegh’s matchless dedication to his research and clinical work has earned him immense respect from his peers, and incredible loyalty from his patients.

As a thought-leader in his specialty, Dr. Elsayegh keeps his finger on the pulse of prevailing trends. Driven by the same compassion which prompted him to pursue medicine initially, he is careful to stay abreast of the most up-to-date tools and practices available to ensure the longevity and well-being of his clients. He noted:

"My primary focus is in looking for advancements in improving the quality of life for patients with neuromuscular disease. ALS is a particularly heartbreaking disease to dedicate your life to, because at this point there is nothing I can do to stop the disease. However,  if I can help patients manage their symptoms, help them with their breathing and quality of life, it makes a huge difference to the patient. I am just completely humbled and honored by the fact that I am the one that can help them with that, and I want to do everything in my power to help them live the best lives they can possibly live."
