Daytona International Speedway Holds Double SARRC Event

Robin Bonnano Runs Near Perfect Race

The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the South Atlantic Road Racing Championship (SARRC) held their annual Double SARRC race event this past weekend at the Daytona International Raceway.

The world-famous race track was plagued with severe weather, including lightning, on Saturday which caused both the practice session and the qualification sessions to be black flagged and terminated. Unfortunately, Robin and her crew were not able to test the new engine and drivetrain package because of the cancellations. Also, due to the terminated sessions, Robin was not able to run the customary “fast lap” which would have determined her starting position for the Double Races on Sunday. The only recourse for the race officials was to simply use one of her warm up laps which placed her in 14th position.

We used our best guess and changed the gear ratio to give Robin better top end speed since Daytona has such significantly long straightaways.

Carl Lunderstadt, Crew Chief

“Having just put in a new race engine and not certain of the proper gear setup, Robin finished third in the morning race,” said head mechanic Tom Peacock. Crew Chief, Carl Lunderstadt stated, “We used our best guess and changed the gear ratio to give Robin better top end speed since Daytona has such significantly long straightaways.”

Robin used her driving experience to move up during the race and finally moved around the second-place car with only 2 laps remaining. Unfortunately, she was unable to close the gap on the front runner and settled for second place in the afternoon race.

“We are very proud of what Robin was able to accomplish, even with the temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, she ran an almost perfect race,” said Carl.

The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) is an American automobile club and sanctioning body supporting road racingrallying, and autocross in the United States. Formed in 1944, it runs many programs for both amateur and professional racers.
