Ameritech Financial Urges Graduate Students With Student Loans to Plan Ahead for Repayment

This is the season for graduate school decisions. Students around the country and the world are receiving news that they’ve been accepted to a graduate degree program in the United States. For those who are lucky enough to get in, they must now contend with how to pay for their degree. On the other side of the journey are those who are approaching graduation and entrance into the job market. For those fortunate enough to graduate with an advanced degree, they must contend with not only finding a job, but many are also figuring out to pay back the loans they took out to finance their education. Ameritech Financial, a private document preparation company which helps federal student loan borrowers apply for repayment plans, urges graduate students to think about their repayment options carefully before graduating.

“As graduate students are planning for their futures, managing repayment should be a top priority if they have taken out student loans,” said Tom Knickerbocker, Executive Vice President of Ameritech Financial. “Especially with the high loan amounts that are often needed to complete graduate school, it’s easy to fall behind if you don’t have a plan.”

We know graduate students might be facing big loan balances, but that doesn't mean they don't have tools at their disposal to manage those loans. Ameritech Financial can help borrowers who need guidance when it comes to repayment. And whatever their situation, we highly encourage grad students to begin mapping out their repayment strategy so that they can leave school with a plan in place.

If graduate students took out federal student loans, there are several factors that may help them manage their loans. For example, two types of federal loans that are available to graduate students — Direct unsubsidized loans and Graduate PLUS loans — have in-school deferments and grace periods. This means no regular payments are due during the time a student is going to school full-time or within six months after leaving school. However, interest is still accruing during those times.

After the deferment and grace periods end, however, there are choices to be made about repayment. Ameritech Financial assists clients in applying for and maintaining enrollment in federal income-driven repayment plans (IDRs). These IDRs calculate a borrower’s monthly payment obligation by considering his or her income and family size. For particular financial situations, such as a high loan balance and a lower income, these IDRS could significantly reduce a borrower’s payment. IDRs also put borrowers on track for forgiveness after a period of 20 to 25 years of repayment.

Ameritech Financial assists borrowers throughout the entire repayment plan application and yearly recertification processes.

“We know graduate students might be facing big loan balances, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have tools at their disposal to manage those loans,” said Knickerbocker. “Ameritech Financial can help borrowers who need guidance when it comes to repayment. And whatever their situation, we highly encourage grad students to begin mapping out their repayment strategy so that they can leave school with a plan in place.”
