Aerosmith have just completed a successful tour in South America. Joe Perry said of the fans, "Half of them were between the ages of 15 to 25. After the encore at one show, we were getting ready to leave, but we hadn't done 'Crazy' and the kids were screaming so loud for it that we just had to go back onstage and play it."

The band will be playing in Europe later in June, and then will return to the U.S.A. and tour with Sammy Hagar from late July. Joe Perry says of the set, "After the European tour we'll start to get feedback from fans about what songs they want to hear. With tweets and Twitters and all that stuff we'll get the vibe of what people want to hear. We have so many songs we never play and we'll definitely make the set list interesting enough so that people won't miss the fact we don't have a new record out." Aerosmith was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970 by guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton (who had originally been in a band together called the Jam Band), singer Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano. In 1971 Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford. They signed up with Columbia Records in 1972, and released a string of albums that went multi-platinum. By the end of the 1970's they were among the most popular hard rock bands in the world. However, internal conflict arose leading to Perry's departure in 1979 and Whitford's departure in 1981. They were replaced by Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay.

Perry and Whitford returned in 1984 and the band signed a new deal with Geffen Records. In 1987 they released "Permanent Vacation" and regained the level of popularity they had experienced in the 1970's. Throughout the late 1980's and 1990's, the band scored several hits and won numerous awards for music from three multi-platinum albums in a row. Their comeback has been described as one of the most remarkable and spectacular in rock 'n' roll history.

Aerosmith are the best-selling American rock band of all time, having sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, including 66.5 million albums in the United States alone. They also hold the record for the most gold and multi-platinum albums by an American group. The band has scored 21 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, nine number 1 Mainstream Rock hits, four Grammy Awards, and ten MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2005 they were ranked number 57 in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

The group hasn't released a record of original material since 2001's Just Push Play, and an attempt to record with Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen producer Brendan O'Brien fell apart when they failed to agree on a musical direction. Perry has higher hopes for their next effort. "Looking at the calendar we'll probably be going into the studio sometime around the holidays or maybe in the beginning of next year. We'll have to take time off from touring to make the best record we can make. We owe it to ourselves to make the best record we can make."

Looking back at the band's last year, Perry feels that the turmoil ultimately brought the band closer together. "This band has a really strange ways of deciding to take vacations," Perry says. "Our whole rhythm just got thrown off over the last three or four years. We ended up touring without new albums a couple of times and it just didn't work out. It felt off-kilter and the tension was pretty high. Now Steven is singing better than I've heard in a long time and the shows have just gotten better and better. It feels like 1971 again. We've had a lot of ups and downs in the past, and we're up-ing right now."
