14 minute single take short film 'Silentium Dei' premieres at Cannes Film Festival 2015

Wolves Films, Berke Creative, Jadeye Vision and SFSDF announce that Silentium Dei, a 14-minute, single-take, narrative drama, starring Amelia Huckel-Bauer, Matt Szymanowski, Brendan Sweeney, and directed by Attila Rostas, will premiere next month at Cannes Film Festival 2015.

The Hungarian born director's thesis film from San Francisco School of Digital Filmmaking will participate in the Court Métrage section of the Festival.

"For a while I was famous (and other people too) for my "long takes," these sequence shots that last several minutes. At that time it was really special. Within these sequence shots there were close-ups and long shots—everything."

Miklós Jancsó, Director

Silentium Dei is a homage to Miklós Jancsó, a true poet of continuous long takes and cinematic symbolism.” - says Rostas.

Jancsó, who died in 2014, with films like ‘The Round-Up’ (1965) and ‘The Red and the White’ (1967), impacted contemporary cinema with uncompromised aesthetic style and political-metaphorical content.

“Group violence committed against women is a persistent symptom throughout history. Attila felt responsible to find a film language that could unfold the continuous nature of this phenomenon. He simply did not allow himself the chance to cut.” - says Producer Anne Gregory.

Inspired by true events, 'Silentium Dei' (meaning God’s silence in Latin), sets forth after a country wedding where a group of men take part in a strange celebration. The "celebration" revolves around ritual, chauvinism and human brutality.

The film was shot in the mountains at Los Gatos Farms, in Los Gatos, California. The camera team of the one-take continuous film - Stephen Berke, Cinematographer, Chris Hebert, Assistant Camera, and Alyssa Moran, Dolly Operator - did a tremendous job with the Fisher 11 on the 90 foot long dolly tracks provided by DTC Lighting & Grip. The post-production took place in San Francisco at Berke Creative, Pyramind and Jadeye Vision post-houses.

Silentium Dei is the first foreign debut by Wolves Films, the San Francisco production company that is premiering its first feature film, ‘The Purple Onion’, later this year.  Founder of Wolves Films, writer and director Matt Szymanowski, took direct participation in the film as one of the main characters.

“Attila’s film is a meticulously choreographed long take, one of the boldest films I have seen in a long time. I am honored to have taken part.” - says Szymanowski.
