Former FDA Special Agent Says DMAA-Containing Supplements Can Kill; Offers Natural Alternative

Author and Primal lifestyle expert, Gary Collins, agrees with FDA's latest consumer warning about DMAA-containing supplements and offers a safe, natural alternative for a pre-workout boost.

Former FDA Special Agent turned author and Primal lifestyle expert, Gary Collins, announced today that fitness buffs, athletes, soldiers and anyone else using nutritional supplements containing the ingredient dimethylamylamine, or DMAA for short, should heed the FDA's recent consumer warning regarding the potential health dangers of DMAA-containing supplements. Collins also recommended a safe, natural alternative for those who enjoy the benefits of a workout-boosting supplement.

Some of the most popular DMAA-containing supplements on the market right now are Jacked3d and OxyElite, both manufactured by the company USPLabs. These products are marketed as performance-enhancing supplements for athletes and bodybuilders who want to increase the intensity and gains from their workouts. According to FDA records, there have been 86 reports associating DMAA-containing supplements to seizures, arrhythmias, heart attacks, strokes, panic attacks and deaths. However, a direct correlation linking DMAA to these conditions is still being investigated.

After the popular weight-loss supplement ephedrine was banned for sale in the U.S. in 2005, manufacturers reintroduced DMAA because of its similar weight-loss effects as a stimulant and vasoconstrictor. In 2012, the FDA sent letters to 11 companies asking them to stop making and selling products containing DMAA, citing that it was illegal to use as a supplement and dangerous for the American consumer. Since then, all but one company, USPlabs, have complied. Health regulators in at least seven other countries have banned all supplements containing DMAA and the World Anti-Doping Agency lists DMAA on their list of banned substances for athletes.

"As a former FDA Special Agent, I can tell you that when the FDA takes action on something like this, you had better be paying attention," said Collins. "The agency isn't known for their proficiency or speed when it comes to American's safety, so the fact that they are issuing warnings about DMAA tells me that some alarming reports and evidence must be landing on their desk."

Collins' book, Primal Power Method: Unlocking the Ancient Secret to Health, offers an insider's view into the dangers of using synthetic supplements. The book is based on Collins' extensive work as an FDA Special Agent, having investigated some of the largest criminal supplement and prescription drug rings in the world.

Collins offered two natural alternatives to DMAA-containing supplements that are safe and effective:

1. A cup of organic green tea with a teaspoon of coconut oil and a little stevia for taste.
2. A single organic espresso shot with a teaspoon of coconut oil.

"Both drinks contain naturally-occurring levels of caffeine, which can aid workout performance, focus as well as having a fat-burning effect. The coconut oil slows the absorption of caffeine, preventing jitters and prolonging the elevated energy. In addition, coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids which the body uses as an energy source. Both drinks can be used as an effective pre-workout supplement to boost training intensity and focus, without the dangers or the cost of synthetic supplements."
