How do you define simplicity and complexity within the design and manufacture of ostomy components? No medical device or component is deemed simple, however, there are 'easier' parts that can be converted compared to the more complex and intricate... 'Simple' parts: Adhesive filter covers / hook and loop closure systems / bag tail components / carbon or charcoal filters / non-adhesive tabs / opening strips. These components typically require die cutting of one material adhered to a liner and provided in high volume on a roll, which can have lower costings with a somewhat straight forward conversion process. Complex parts: Hydrocolloid flanges and washers / hydrocolloid wafers (base plates) with printed liners / drainage systems / coupling rings. More complex parts require a multitude of materials laminated together and run through a more thought out rotary process due to the type of materials being used. Additional processes such as printing onto liners and assembly is included, typically converting lower numbers per minute compared to the 'simpler' parts resulting in a higher cost per part. #ostomy
