14-year-old Naya Ellis has invented a watch that measures heartbeat and nerve impulses to pick up early signs of stroke. Called WingItt, the watch was helped the 9th grader be named a champion in the National STEM Challenge last month. She's also a STEM Nola Fellow. She tells The74th: “I want to do something I’m interested in, that will also change the world.” Read more about Naya through the links in our comments. #steministupdates #inventor #strokeprevention #health

Our ambassador alums show up for the next generation. This post put a huge smile on our faces, Beatris A. Mendez Gandica! #ifthenshecan #thisiswhatascientistlookslike
🎉 Our Nuevo Foundation team had an unforgettable experience in #PuertoRico! We traveled from Seattle, Chicago, and Florida for special events sponsored by @ifthen, featuring four amazing #IFTHENAmbassadors— Greetchen Diaz Muñoz, Roselin Rosario-Meléndez, Ph.D., Minerva Del Razo and me. Together, we opened a museum exhibit at Centro Criollo de Ciencia y Tecnologia del Caribe (C3Tec) with the inspiring IF/THEN statues. We connected with the local community, celebrated a panel with the Ambassadors (including Ana Maria Porras, who joined us remotely), and witnessed the NCWIT Aspirations Award for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Check out our reel to see us take pictures, answer questions, and share our love for STEM with everyone! Special thanks to Ciencia Puerto Rico and Greetchen for making this event possible. https://lnkd.in/dd4abPDp Let's inspire the next generation to discover the world of STEM! 🌟 CC: Oliver Zhang Ximena Cortez Jeremiah I. Anna Korhonen wants AI #developers to think about responsible building before development begins. She tells Kyle Wiggers for TechCrunch: "Developers of AI tend to think about ethics as an afterthought — after the technology has already been built. The best way to think about it is before any development begins. Questions such as, "Do I have a diverse enough team to develop a fair system?" or "Is my data really free to use and representative of all the users' populations?" or "Are my techniques robust?" should really be asked at the outset." "Although we can address some of this problem via education, we can only enforce it via regulation. The recent development of national and global AI regulations is important and needs to continue to guarantee that future technologies will be safer and more trustworthy." "Much of my current research is driven by the mission to develop AI that can improve human lives for the better. AI has a huge positive potential for social and global good. A big part of my job as an educator is to encourage the next generation of AI scientists and leaders to focus on realizing that potential." Read more via Yahoo! Thank you for all the ways you show up for the next generation, Gracie! #publicspeaking #keynote #ifthenshecan
A few weeks ago, I had the honor of being the keynote speaker at the South Texas College STEM Summit! I also hosted a workshop where students identified problems and built prototype solutions for everything from runaway dogs and disorganized closets to microplastics and littering. And while I was in McAllen, TX, I stopped by the International Museum of Art & Science to see their IF/THEN display and found some familiar faces 😀 Davina P. Durgana, PhD, Rae Wynn-Grant, PhD, and Dana Bolles Thank you to South Texas College for inviting me out to your campus to be part of this great event!

READING: Elite runner Lauren Fleshman wants to change how sports treats women and girl athletes. She’s an athlete with an education in STEM. She’s advocating for sports to stop copy/pasting the model for men’s sports and applying it to girls. Instead, these systems should be tailored to athletes physiological needs: such as sports bras included with team uniforms and spaces where it’s inclusive to discuss menstruation as a part of overall wellness. Her new book “Good for a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man’s World” combines all of her acumen into the subject matter at hand. She told the Seattle Times: “I thought, I can put together a more complete picture of what’s happening on a bigger scale somehow — between my many years in this sport as an athlete, years as a coach, human biology degree, study of physiology, and storytelling abilities. I wanted to take a crack at it.” More through the links in our comments. #steminist #womeninsports #physiology https://lnkd.in/dejMzafu
