As you may have noticed, our tech news digests focus on recent cybersecurity attacks. We just want to highlight that no one is safe in this battle. Apparently, even if you’re Ivanti, you should be constantly monitoring your security measures. By the way, our product helps with this. We’re not a cybersecurity firm, but our network monitoring tools automatically discover all the devices and assets in your network. Now, let’s move to this week’s news! An external cybersecurity research firm discovered vulnerabilities in several thousands of Ivanti’s VPN appliances. Through these vulnerabilities, malicious actors could potentially gain access to remote code execution. Ivanti promptly advised its customers to update their VPNs to the latest, secure versions. Luckily, looks like no one has exploited the vulnerabilities. The cyber-attack has been assigned a CVSS rating of 8.2 and is tracked as CVE-2024-21894. As a result, Ivanti has announced that it’s planning to revamp its cybersecurity organization completely. https://bit.ly/3xzpA8u Redis, an in-memory data store and caching solution, has introduced a new licensing system. Cloud service providers hosting Redis offerings will no longer be able to use Redis’ source code for free. The firm also later announced that using “Redis” in product names would be impossible. https://bit.ly/4aMJGu8 The Biden administration is preparing to issue a document that would prevent US private firms from using Kaspersky’s cybersecurity software. While government agencies are already banned from using the Russian firm’s solutions, banning private companies would be unprecedented. https://cnn.it/3xBWaXp Bun, a comprehensive toolkit designed to simplify the development process for JavaScript and TypeScript applications, is now on Windows. We've been absolute fans of Bun and can now finally use it in our product! Bun is 15-20 faster than anyone else 😍 https://bit.ly/4awMV9y #bun #redis #cybersecurity

Is building custom software better than buying a subscription? 🧐 (Is cooking at home better than ordering takeout?) Sometimes, the choice is obvious. If you have a small budget, you can’t afford to hire a dev team. For other cases, if you really struggle to decide, here’s a short overview. The “buy” option: - No development costs, but you pay for licensing, - No need to worry about support and updates, but vendors might charge additional fees for it, - Limited customization options, but the tech is tried and tested. The “build” option: - You need to recruit, hire, and keep a team of developers, - For that, you get broader customization options, backing you up in case you need to scale, - If you rely on an existing team, you choose NOT to build something else when building this. But of course, that’s not enough to make a decision. In most cases, you need to do careful research first. Our 2c: whatever you choose, you can’t avoid building long-term relationships with people, be it vendors or your employees. A detailed step-by-step guide in the article on our website: https://bit.ly/4cTYbhC

🤯 Linux is alive, and ChatGPT is dead—this week’s dramatic news digest is here 😱 A serious backdoor was found in the XZ Utils data compression package that could potentially “log in to every Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu box on the internet.” It received a CVSS rating of 10. Although spotted before production releases, it affected beta versions of Fedora, Debian, Arch Linux, and Kali Linux. It was discovered that a user named JiaT75, who had been contributing to the open-source project for two years, had enabled the vulnerability. https://bit.ly/3J4UsQK Claude 3 Opus has surpassed ChatGPT-4 for the first time in the Chatbot Arena leaderboard. Chatbot Arena is managed by Large Model Systems Organization (LMSYS ORG). Its ranks LLMs based on thousands of comparative evaluations of their responses. For the first time since the leaderboard’s establishment (May 2023), Claude has taken the first place in the ranking, not ChatGPT. https://yhoo.it/3J5KuP6 Microsoft plans to build a $100 billion supercomputer named "Stargate" for OpenAI, aiming to fuel future AI advancements, reports The Information. Stargate, part of Microsoft and OpenAI's collaboration, is set to be one of the world's largest data centers, requiring 5 gigawatts of power and potentially launching by 2028. Inspired by the 1994 science-fiction film, "Stargate" signifies a gateway to new discoveries. https://bit.ly/3U5VulX Amazon's cashier-less technology, once celebrated as the future of retail, is being removed from its US Amazon Fresh grocery stores due to lack of customer adoption, replaced by Dash Cart smart shopping carts. This past week, Microsoft also revealed it is planning “several hundreds” of layoffs in its AWS division. https://cnn.it/3U5bqoj
