The New York Center For Advanced Parathyroid Surgery Is Now Using The Tosoh AIA-360 For Rapid Intraoperative Parathyroid Hormone Testing (IOPTH).

New York Center for Advanced Parathyroid Surgery is now using the leading Parathyroid Hormone Analyzer for IOPTH, Tosoh AIA-360, which ensures the success of minimally invasive parathyroid surgery.

The New York Center for Advanced Parathyroid Surgery at St. Anthony's Community Hospital (www.advancedparathyroid.com) is now using the Tosoh AIA-360, the leading Parathyroid Hormone Analyzer for Rapid Intraoperative Parathyroid Hormone Testing (IOPTH). The intraoperative PTH testing is performed on most patients undergoing parathyroid surgery. The purpose of the test is to ensure that there is a "chemical" cure to the hyperparathyroidism, or overactivity of the parathyroid glands, following procedures.

Dr. Lawrence Gordon, MD, the director of the New York Center for Advanced Parathyroid Surgery, said, "Ten minutes after we remove a parathyroid tumor, using IOPTH we expect to see a drop of 50% in the parathyroid hormone level. This helps us ensure that we have removed the offending parathyroid gland and it also helps us to make sure that there are not multiple adenoma which can occur in about 10-15% of patients." Multiple adenoma, or benign tumors, can lead to continued hyperparathyroidism post-surgery if they are left undetected following the removal of the primary adenoma.

Tosoh's ST AIA-PACK Intact PTH is designed for the quantitative measurement of parathyroid hormone in human serum and EDTA plasma on all Tosoh AIA System analyzers. Measurements of parathyroid hormone levels are used in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia, which result from disorders of calcium metabolism.

The ST AIA-PACK Intact PTH can be assayed on all Tosoh AIA systems including the AIA-360, AIA-600II and AIA-1800. The 10 minute incubation time means faster turnaround time for patient results. Other impressive features include sensitivity of 1.0 pg/ml and 90 day calibration stability. The AIA-360 is the first small footprint and light weight automated immunoassay analyzer (16w x 16d x 21h, 61 lbs) currently available in the U.S. market for assaying Intact PTH. This redefines the use of Intact PTH for patients undergoing parathyroid surgery. The AIA-360 is well suited for surgical suites, dialysis clinics and nephrology offices as a dedicated system or for full menu testing. Hospitals and laboratories with high volume testing needs can opt for the AIA-600II and AIA-1800. The ST AIA-PACK Intact PTH is packaged in 100 tests/kit. It uses Tosoh's unique dry reagent technology Unit Dose Test Cups. This means no reagent waste, no reagent preparation and minimal consumables.

"Intraoperative Parathyroid Hormone Testing (IOPTH) is a specialized and relatively new test that is currently used at only a few medical facilities, and we are very pleased to be able to offer this feature to our patients with the addition of the Tosoh AIA-360" said Lawrence Gordon, MD.

In addition to his work with The New York Center for Advanced Parathyroid Surgery, Dr. Gordon continues to make strides in the healthcare industry as the Founder and CEO of Waiting Room Solutions, a leading web-based provider of fully integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Practice Management Software (PM). The 2011 Waiting Room Solutions Web Based EHR and PM V4.0 is 2011/2012 compliant and was certified as a Complete EHR by CCHIT on January 11, 2011.
