Online, May 7, 2012 (Newswire.com) - The Medical Letter, a non-profit organization based in New Rochelle, NY, was founded by Arthur Kallet and Harold Aaron in 1959. Its publications, which provide physicians and other health care providers with unbiased, critical evaluations of prescription drugs, carry no advertising and are supported entirely by subscription fees.
Mr. Kallet, who died in 1972, was the co-author of 100,000,000 Guinea Pigs: Dangers in Everyday Foods, Drugs, and Cosmetics and the co-founder of Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports. Dr. Aaron, who died in 1988, was the first Medical Director of Consumers Union, the author of Good Health and Bad Medicine and Our Common Ailment, and a founder of the Health Insurance Plan of New York (HIP).
The Arthur Kallet/Harold Aaron fund was established by the staff of The Medical Letter in 1973 in memory of Mr. Kallet to provide scholarship assistance for a deserving first-year medical student; the name was changed in 1988 to also honor Dr. Aaron. The funds raised by the staff every year from bake sales, auctions; raffles etc. are matched by The Medical Letter.
