The Green Investment Bank Officially Opens

The Green Investment Bank (GIB) officially opened yesterday and provided sustainable development capital for its 'Energy Efficiency Investments Fund'. This is the first investment that the UK's 'green bank' has made in its effort to help bu

GIB has made a £50m commitment to help lower the amount of carbon emissions produced by UK properties and lower the energy costs faced by businesses.

The Green Investment Bank will give £5m from the money committed to the Kingspan Group to help increase its energy efficiency. As part of the plan Kingspan will retrofit their UK factories with systems such as building management systems, energy metering, lighting upgrades, fan optimisation and a compressed air system upgrade.

It is hoped that this investment will help the company cut its energy usage by 15% and decrease the carbon emissions by more than 4,500 tonnes every year. The first part of the project is due to start next year at Kingspan's Holywell factory. Johnson controls will provide the service for the projects.

CEO of the UK GIB, Shaun Kingsbury said: "This project represents a significant development in the energy efficiency market. Energy efficiency improvement should be one of the most compelling investments companies can make. I hope that the example set by Kingspan, SDCL and Johnson Controls can be followed across the UK both to reduce wasteful consumption of energy and to save businesses money."

All companies can follow this trend of decreasing their carbon emissions and energy costs. By simply seeking an Energy Performance Certificate, a property owner can discover the extent of their carbon emissions and unnecessary energy costs. The Energy Performance Certificate will detail where a property is losing energy and how much.

Further to that, the Energy Performance Certificate will detail the energy efficiency potential of a property and explain how that potential can be reached. A skilled team of Building Surveyors and Commercial Energy Assessors use the latest technology such as Thermal Imaging to determine the excess energy emissions and cost.

The skilled team will explain how the energy efficiency of a building can be reached. Changes such as replacement windows, the implementation of insulation and energy metering can significantly lower energy costs in a property.

Old, large buildings in particular can benefit from seeking the changes that can be brought about from an Energy Performance Certificate. Old buildings were often built without taking energy efficiency into consideration.
