Callaway golf have been manufacturing for many years and are one of the leading brand competitors in the golf world. The Golf Company was founded by former Burlington Industries textile president R Ely Callaway. He was raised in Lagrange and was a graduate from Emory University.

Callaway was a very successful business in the textile industry and was very fond of playing golf. Callaway would use clubs by Hickory Sticks which were constructed of hickory shafts with a steel core. When hickory sticks were running low on funds they looked for investors to help the company. They approached Callaway and at the time he had just sold his vineyards for a $9m.

Later in 1984 he bought the rest of the company for $400,000. In 1983 he became president of the company and moved it to Carlsbad California where he sold golf clubs out of Cadillac. The company changed its name in 1988 to its present name.

In 1986, Callaway hired a billiard cue designer, Richard C Helmstetter, as a club consultant. He made an impression on Callaway and later became the chief club designer that same year. With this help the company developed the legendary Big Bertha driver using the biggest club head of its time, 190cc.

Later Callaway hired Roger Cleveland as chief club designer in 1996. He launched the popular Callaway Forged Wedges.

They were constructed from Carbon Steel and a face with modified U grooves which was the first of its kind. That year Callaway announced a new golf ball which could revolutionise the way golf balls were developed. They spent over three years developing this ball. The research into the ball had been about $170m investment. The manufacturing equipment and facilities were designed specifically for the unique production for the new ball.

The engineers from Callaway had recruited Du Pont and Boeing who used aerodynamic co puter programs to evaluate more than 300 dimple patterns and more than 1000 variations of ball cores, boundary layers and cover materials to create the new rule 35 ball. The engineers designed a complete performance ball rather than separate balls developed for spin, control, distance and durability.

1997 Odyssey sports was bought by Callaway and was used for their new line of putters. They later released in 2000 the Odyssey White Hot Putter which later went on to be one of the most popular putters of all time.

Ely Callaway resigned in 1996 and Donald H Dye took over as CEO and President. However Callaway continued to be a part of the company in a promotional role. He later came back to the company in 1998 to reassume his leadership position. Unfortunately Callaway died in 2001 due to a pancreatic cancer.

Callaway have sponsored a variety of players and have probably some of the biggest names in golf. Just some of the names are; Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Mark Brooks, Thomas Bjorn, Michael Campbell, Nick Dougherty, Gary Player, David Leadbetter, Johnny Miller, Arnold Palmer and Annika Sorenstam.
