(http://www.dopharmacy.com/) : Despite the risks, chemotherapy is administered in children who are fighting with cancer. Although it gives immediate and effective results, long term view of cancer treatment in children says something else .According to a new research children who underwent cancer specific treatment such as chemotherapy are at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases on account of treatment related bodily changes.

The researchers checked more than 300 girls and boys who had survived from leukemia or other cancerous tumors. The participants belonged to age group 9 to 18 and were predominantly white. Medical assessment was made for possible decline in arterial functions. Researchers tested artery stiffness, functioning and thickness and compared the data with 200 siblings who didn't have cancer.

Researchers found that childhood leukemia survivors showed 9% decline in arterial health after completing treatment i.e. chemotherapy as compared to children who didn't have cancer. This arterial decline is more likely to be associated with premature artery disease.

Researchers said that since cancer treatment increases the risk of heart diseases in later disease, these children should be monitored regularly. Risk management should be planned even if they are young. Health care providers should immediately monitor cardiovascular risk factors after completion of chemotherapy. Similarly, those who have survived cancer in childhood should make positive lifestyle changes to lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

This is the first research which studied possible connection between cancer treatment in childhood and increased cardiovascular diseases risk in later years.

These findings may not apply to any ethnic group except the whites. The link between heart diseases and specific chemotherapy agent responsible for arterial decline has not been found. These findings should be considered preliminary till get published in peer reviewed journal.
