Abhinav Bindra becomes the first ever Indian to win individual gold medal at Olympics. Indian national anthem was played at Beijing Olympics
after 28 years when Abhinav made history by winning the gold in 10m Air Rifle event by scoring 700.5 points in the final. Last time India won gold was hockey gold in 1980 Moscow Olympics. Silver medal was won by China's Zhu Qinan, gold medalist at Athens 2004, with a total score of 699.7. Finland's Henri Hakkinen, who was leading after the qualification round, won the bronze medal with score of 699.4.

Anubhav Bindra showed extraordinary potential and got 10.7 on his first shot. None of his shots dropped below 10.0 in finals. Bindra and Hakkinen were tied for first place in the last shot, but Bindra won the gold medal with his excellent shot of the final, a marvelous 10.8. On the contrary, Hakkinen's last shot wasn't his best, a lowly 9.7. This allowed Zhu to trounce Hakkinen and win the silver medal. Zhu shot 10.5 on his last shot. It was great moment for Indians that they were dreaming for decades. President Pratibha Patil, PM Manmohan Singh, Sports Minister MS Gill, IOA President Suresh Kalmadi and all high level sports officials congratulated Abhinav Bindra for his outstanding performance and making country proud. Just after winning the gold medal he was showered with cash and money from state and central governments. Punjab government declared to give Rs.1 crore, Bihar government Rs.11 lakh, Cricket Board BCCI Rs.25 lakh and 'lifetime golden pass' from Indian Railways.

The medal bought lot of changes on the sports upfront. This can change the face of Olympics sports in India. Abhinav Bindra owed his medal to his family and coaches.
