May 15, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Members of The Sanctuary Covenant Church, led by Pastor Dennis Edwards, in Minneapolis, Minnesota will gather at 10am, on Sunday, May 18, for an opportunity to explore the assets of the north Minneapolis community in an event called Tour de North.
North Minneapolis faces a great many challenges, but it is also a vibrant, diverse and engaged community with assets of people, organizations, parks and other resources that make it a great place to live. As a church, we want to highlight the assets of north Minneapolis to break down the negative stereotypes of this wonderful community.
Beginning at Anwatin Middle School in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis, Sanctuary members will participate in the Tour de North by running, biking or driving along 1 of 5 pre-defined routes through north Minneapolis. Along each route, there are ten checkpoints where people can get refreshed, stop to talk to community members or learn more about the resources in the community. After stopping at the ten checkpoints along the way and getting a stamp on their route map, participants will eventually arrive at North Mississippi Regional Park for a picnic.
Through this event, Sanctuary Covenant Church hopes to engage its members with the beauty, people and resources in north Minneapolis, not just the negative stories heard in the news.
Sanctuary is planning to host the Tour de North annually into the future. Sanctuary hopes to build a permanent worship facility in North Minneapolis in the near future and wants to lay the groundwork for connecting its people deeper into the community.
