Portsmouth Reaches Out With Fairy Tale Book Now Available Worldwide

A new book celebrating the strange, macabre and funny side of the UK's city of Portsmouth is now available worldwide.

The city of Portsmouth is celebrated in Portsmouth Fairy Tales for Grown-Ups - a collection of strange, macabre, ghoulish and funny stories now on sale.

The original Portsmouth, England features in tales of outlandish characters such as the hunter seeking road-killed unicorns, the one-legged cross-dressing mermaid or the Victorian police inspector searching for three little piggies. Telling 25 original stories by 11 Portsmouth writers, the book was the brainchild of Tessa Ditner.

Matt Wingett, Publisher

“Fairy tales give you the freedom to create anything you want,” she says with a playful smile. “The writers have taken their stories in all directions. For some, the Grimm and grim side prompted tales of ghosts and grisly deaths, some have launched into futuristic worlds, and others tell tales that are both silly and joyous. It's been fab working with so many talented writers.”

The book's cover features the stunning artwork of Portsmouth artist Jon Everitt, depicting a suited man with a fish-tail for a head. Being beside the sea, some of the tales are indeed fishy – one story tells of a girl borne out to sea on a whale. There's even a city map on the back, showing where each story is set.

Another Portsmouth writer, Matt Wingett says, “Portsmouth is Britain's only island city. We're separated from the mainland by a narrow stretch of water, and somehow that island eccentricity comes out in the stories. It's got some great history, too. It's where Arthur Conan Doyle invented Sherlock Holmes and it's where Charles Dickens was born, too!”

Published by Portsmouth publisher Life Is Amazing, Portsmouth Fairy Tales For Grown Ups is now available from Amazon.
