KBE Building Corp. Taking Major International Airport to New Heights with Concourse Expansion

KBE Building Corporation has started construction on an extensive expansion of Concourse E at BWI Airport

KBE Building Corporation has started construction on an extensive expansion of Concourse E at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), a major international hub. The expansion is expected to be completed by late spring 2015.

Hired by the Maryland Aviation Administration, KBE is managing construction for the $7 million expansion, which consists of a 16,000-square-foot, 3-story addition at the end of International Pier.

"BWI is an important U.S. airport serving American and international fliers. We're proud to give this airport an expanded concourse to handle its growing business."

Eric Brown, KBE Co-owner and VP of Operations

KBE will install a new fire line at existing gates from E4 to E8. The firm will also modify the existing CW & HW plant by extending water lines and existing electrical and plumbing systems.

Concourse E, known officially as the Governor William Donald Schaefer International Terminal, has six gates handling flights from Air Canada Express, AirTran Airways, British Airways, and Condor. Concourse E also hosts an Air Mobility Command post that flies active service troops to destinations worldwide.

Built in 1950, BWI is located in Baltimore, Md. The nation’s 22nd-busiest airport, it handles an average of more than 700 flights per day. “BWI is an important U.S. airport serving American and international fliers,” said KBE co-owner and VP of Operations Eric Brown. “We’re proud to give this airport an expanded concourse to handle its growing business.”

During the project, KBE must comply with high security and construction restrictions. No work can be done in public areas between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm, and no work can be done on the existing departure level concourse between 2:00 pm and 10:00 pm.

“We have experience working around the public at busy airports,” said KBE Project Manager James Schloss. “We managed high security restrictions and an active airport terminal while upgrading and expanding Concourse C at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Our priority has always been ensuring public safety and the safety of our employees and sub-contractors.”

KBE is well-prepared for aviation work, having served as general contractor for the new construction of a $2.8 million hangar for Ritz Flight at Leesburg Executive Airport. The firm also managed construction for a $6.1 million LearJet, Inc. hangar at Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
