Flex Durability Test of Aluminum Plastic Composite Package for Milk Powder

The flex durability of the aluminum plastic composite package for milk powder is critical to the shelf life of the product. LabthinkFDT-02 Flex Durability Tester was used to test the flex durability of the aluminum plastic composite package for milk powder mentioned in this article.

The milk powder is usually packed in aluminum plastic composite package, which is economic and portable. The aluminum plastic composite film contains aluminum foil, which is relatively frangible and as a result pinholes or wrinkles are liable to appear in the production, processing or transportation of milk powder. Due to those problems, the barrier property as well as physical and mechanical properties of the packages will be reduced to some degree. In order to protect the milk powder from oxidization, deterioration or caking within its shelf life, the manufacturers of milk powder have to strengthen the control of the flex durability of the aluminum plastic composite packages.

The tests mentioned in this article are performed according to ASTM F392-1993(2004): Standard Test Method for Flex Durability of Flexible Barrier Materials. The behaviors including flexing and bending in production, processing and transportation of the aluminum plastic composite packages are simulated in the flex durability tests. The flex resistance of the packaging material can be evaluated by the change of the number of pinholes or the change of barrier property.

Testing Procedures

1.1 Fix the test specimen prepared according to 4.3 in the instrument with double-faced pressure sensitive adhesive tape, 10 ~ 12mm in width.

1.2 Set test parameters and select test mode.

1.3 Close the glass door of the instrument and press Test key to start the test.

1.4 When the preset test cycles are reached, the instrument will stop test automatically.

Test Results

The test result can be evaluated in two ways:

l  Apply colored turpentine on the specimen after flex durability test and count the number of the pinholes by counting the colored points on the white paper which is placed under the specimen

l  Test the gas and water vapor permeability of the test specimen after flex durability test

The test results mentioned in this article shows that the test specimen (the milk powder package) is of poor flex durability and that is why the seal performance of the package is reduced in transportation and marketing of the products.

 Conclusion

A large number of pinholes appear in the test specimen after flex durability test, which proves that the aluminum plastic composite film is of poor flexibility. As a result, folds or small pinholes are liable to appear in the package during transportation or marketing of the products, the oxygen transmission rate of the package will be increased and the seal performance of the package will be reduced. In order to avoid the problems mentioned above, the thickness of the aluminum foil and the adhesives used between the aluminum foil and plastics should be controlled properly through the flex durability tests.
