Donal Fohrman Supports Increased Scrutiny of Temp Agencies

The increase comes as a result of OSHA's Temporary Worker Initiative, which was announced in 2013.

In 2014, OSHA dramatically increased the amount of inspections it performed at temporary work agencies. OSHA conducted 29 such inspections in 2012 and 67 in 2013. It conducted 283 in 2014. That's a 322 percent increase from the previous year. Chicago workers' compensation attorney Donald Fohrman supports the increase in inspections and says it's much needed.

The increase comes as a result of OSHA's Temporary Worker Initiative, which was announced in 2013. The initiative was implemented to protect temporary workers and make sure they receive the same safety protections of full-time employees.

Mr. Fohrman believes that safety is a major issue in the temp worker world. He argues, "Temp workers are often thrown straight into work when they arrive at a new site. They may not undergo safety training or even receive the tools and gear they need to be protected from hazards."

Indeed, a lack of sufficient safety communication was the most common violation that OSHA found during the inspections. The next most common violations were noise exposure and a lack of necessary safety equipment.

Mr. Fohrman, founder of Donald W. Fohrman and Associates, a group of workers' compensation lawyers in Chicago, argues that workplace injuries can be especially challenging for temporary workers.

He claims, "There can often be dispute about which party is actually liable for the injury - the job site employer or the temp agency. Settling that dispute can sometimes delay the compensation that the worker needs to pay medical bills and other expenses."

According to Mr. Fohrman, he and his team work hard to help those temp workers get the compensation and treatment that they need.
