Award-Winning New York City Law Firm Perry & Aronin to Represent Ramsey Orta

Renowned attorneys Perry & Aronin to fight at the defense of Orta in separate case following Eric Garner death

Attorneys Kenneth M. Perry and William R. Aronin have been retained for the defense of Ramsey Orta, who, after filming the death of Eric Garner, has been subjected to multiple arrests by Staten Island Police.

Ramsey Orta was first indicted on weapons charges stemming from an arrest on August 2, 2014. Police claim that Orta had placed a handgun in the waistband of a juvenile in an area that was near where Eric Garner died. After being released on that charge, he was then indicted for alleged multiple drug sales to undercover officers. Orta claims that the charges are in retaliation to his video and testimony in the Garner case, and has entered pleas of not guilty.

Eric Garner died on July 17, 2014, after a video shot by Orta shows Garner being restrained on the ground by NYPD officers. Garner was put in a chokehold (NYPD policy prohibits the use of chokeholds), lost consciousness, and was pronounced dead one hour later at an area hospital. While medical examiners concluded that Garner died by “compression of neck, compression of chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police”, there was no damage to his windpipe or neck bones found. The death was ruled a homicide.

On December 3, 2014, the officer accused of using the chokehold on Garner was not indicted by a grand jury. The decision was met with public rallies and protests, and by December 28 of 2014, at least 50 demonstrations had been held for Garner along with hundreds more against police brutality.

Orta has also filmed, and posted online, videos of other beatings of civilians by police.  These videos also predated the recent spate of Orta’s arrests.

Ramsey Orta is currently in jail on Riker’s Island on $100,000 bail. Perry & Aronin have started a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising the $16,250 needed for Orta’s bail bond.

Both William Aronin and Kenneth Perry have been named by National Trial Lawyers as earning spots on its “Top 100 Trial Lawyers” list. The pair has collective decades of experience; Ken Perry has been practicing law for nearly 40 years. In addition to the full time practice of law, he was also the CEO of two successful government defense-contracting firms.

William Aronin, a graduate of Brooklyn Law School in 2009, has already been recognized as one of the Top 40 Trial Lawyers Under 40 by the National Trial Lawyer Association. He is co-author of the New York City Bar Association’s Official Report on Cloud Computing and part-owner of Lawyer to Lawyer.
