Pocket Rocket Inducted to WBC Legends of Boxing Museum

Online, December 6, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Wayne 'Pocket Rocket' McCullough (40), the first and only Irish boxer ever to win a World Boxing Council (WBC) world championship to date, has been inducted into the WBC Legends of Boxing Museum, at a ceremony in the American Sports University, San Bernardino, California.

Speaking of the honour, in recognition of his more than thirty year long career in boxing, Wayne McCullough said: "I am humbled to have been nominated for induction into the WBC Legends of Boxing Museum. I could only have imagined that someday I may have been a part of this when I was striving to become a world champion. I became the first ever World Ambassador for Peace and Goodwill in Sports in 2005 and now to be an inductee into this historic museum, recognising my outstanding achievements in the sport that I love, is overwhelming.

"I was excited to join Filipino sensation Luisito Espinosa at my induction and some of the most legendary boxers ever to have laced a pair of gloves, who have already been inducted into the WBC Legends of Boxing Museum including Lennox Lewis, Gabriel Ruelas, Roger Maywether and Paul Banke, Ken Norton, Genaro 'Chicanito' Hernandez and the late Diego 'Chico' Corrales."

Wayne's induction into the WBC Legends of Boxing Museum was awarded following a decision by the board which rigorously reviews the achievements and accomplishments of boxers nominated and which must be of an outstanding standard. The museum recognises some of the greatest boxers of all time and boasts a display of artifacts for inspiration, learning and the enjoyment of the public who visit the museum.

Wayne McCullough grew up in Belfast and began his boxing career at the tender age of eight. He became one of the top fighters in the history of boxing in Ireland with over 50 International tournaments under his belt, fighting a total of 319 amateur contests, losing only 11. Wayne left the amateur ranks after winning a Bronze medal in the World Cup, a Gold medal in the Commonwealth Games and a Silver medal at the Olympics Games. He turned professional under the guidance of the late, great, Eddie Futch. He won the North American Boxing Championship in 1993 and the WBC Bantamweight title in July 1995.

Awarded the 'Best Chin in Boxing', he is also the WBC World Ambassador for Peace and Goodwill in Sports, winner of the Belfast Telegraph's first ever Sports Personality award and currently lives in Las Vegas where he works as a PR Associate for UFC.
