A pair of Philip James de Loutherbourg (French, 1740 - 1812) oil on canvas landscape paintings will sell in Manor Auctions May 7th Fine Art Auction. The pair of Loutherbourg paintings were acquired from a private Florida collection and are in very good condition. Loutherbourg established himself as an accomplished romantic landscape painter during his time. These paintings are a good representation of Loutherbourg's grasp on landscape painting and romanticism. Throughout his life, Loutherbourg was an alsatian painter, illustrator and stage designer, active in France and England.

Trained under his father, Philipp Jakob (1698-1768), an accomplished painter of miniature portraits. Jakob moved the family to Paris in 1755. While living in Paris Loutherbourg became a pupil of Carle Vanloo; he also attended Jean-Georges Wille's engraving academy in the Quai des Augustins and Francesco Casanova's studio. Wille directed Loutherbourg's attention to 17th-century Dutch landscape artists, such as Philips Wouwerman and Nicolaes Berchem, and in 1763 Denis Diderot noticed the inspiration of the latter in Loutherbourg's first Salon exhibit, a landscape with figures (Liverpool, Walker A.G.).

Manor Auctions is pleased to bring these fine Loutherbourg landscape paintings to market in the their May 7th Fine Art Catalog Auction, taking place in their Tallahassee Auction Gallery.
